The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this role on behalf of the Craig Family Centre.

About the Role: We are seeking enthusiastic, compassionate, and creative teenagers aged 15–18 to volunteer as mentors in our LEGO Club Mentor Program. This initiative supports children aged 6–12 who may be experiencing social isolation, are neurodivergent, shy, or simply in need of positive peer interaction and social skill development. Through weekly LEGO building challenges and guided mentoring, this role is a chance for young people to make a meaningful difference while developing their own leadership, communication, and facilitation skills.

Key Duties:

  • Attend weekly LEGO Club sessions at Craig Family Centre in Ashburton (Thursdays 4.00pm - 5.30pm)
  • Be buddied with a child participant and provide one-on-one support
  • Encourage creativity, teamwork and confidence through structured LEGO challenges
  • Support children to express themselves during group show-and-tell
  • Model positive communication and leadership behaviour
  • Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and engaging group environment
  • Participate in occasional co-design sessions to shape the program alongside other mentors and staff
  • Assist with basic setup and pack down before/after each session

About Our Organisation: The Craig Family Centre has served the Boroondara community for over 60 years. We are a welcoming, inclusive neighbourhood house offering programs for all ages with a focus on connection, lifelong learning, wellbeing and social inclusion. Our children’s programs aim to foster resilience, creativity, and community engagement. The LEGO Club is one of our youth-focused initiatives designed to empower both primary-aged children and teenage mentors to grow in confidence and build strong relationships.

Benefits of Volunteering with Us:

  • Contribute meaningfully to your local community
  • Gain real-world leadership and mentoring experience
  • Fulfil IB CAS, Duke of Edinburgh or other community service requirements
  • Participate in a youth-led, co-designed program with opportunities for growth
  • Receive guidance, training and support throughout your role
  • Free Working with Children Check assistance provided
  • Build connections with other like-minded teens and families
  • Receive a reference for future work, study or volunteering opportunities
  • Be recognised for your commitment at our annual volunteer celebration

Impact of Your Involvement: As a LEGO Club Mentor, you’ll play a direct role in supporting children who may otherwise struggle to connect socially. Your presence and guidance can help build their confidence, communication and emotional wellbeing. At the same time, you’ll be developing your own voice as a leader and mentor, gaining insight into child development, community services, and inclusive education. This is more than a volunteer role – it’s a chance to help create a fun, safe and encouraging space for kids who need it most, while building valuable skills that will benefit you long into the future.

We welcome people from all backgrounds and encourage young people who are passionate about inclusion, leadership or helping others to get in touch.

Build more than just LEGO – build confidence, friendships and your future.
