Volunteer Peer Support – Chinese Speakers with Lived Experience of Gambling Harm

(Mandarin and/or Cantonese required) Are you looking to give back and support others using your own lived experience with gambling harm? We’re seeking compassionate volunteers who speak Mandarin and/or Cantonese and have lived experience of gambling harm — either personally or through supporting a loved one — to join our Chinese Peer Connection program. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference by providing telephone-based peer support to people navigating similar challenges.

About the Program

Chinese Peer Connection is a long-standing, trusted program that has supported the Chinese community in Victoria for over 15 years. We provide culturally responsive peer support and education to individuals affected by gambling harm, helping people feel heard, understood, and empowered. Your lived experience, insight, and empathy can offer hope and reassurance to others at the beginning or middle of their recovery journey.

About the Role

As a Volunteer Peer Supporter, you will:

  • Provide one-on-one telephone support to people affected by gambling harm
  • Share your lived experience where appropriate to build trust and connection
  • Offer understanding, encouragement, and practical strategies
  • Help reduce isolation and support positive change
  • Maintain confidentiality and respectful communication at all times

You’ll be fully supported by a dedicated team and work closely with the Program Coordinator to ensure you feel confident, safe, and supported in your role.

What We’re Looking For

We welcome expressions of interest from people who:

  • Have lived experience of gambling harm (personal or through a loved one)
  • Speak Mandarin or Cantonese (written skills helpful but not essential)
  • Have strong listening and communication skills
  • Are empathetic, reliable, and non-judgmental
  • Are comfortable providing support over the phone

No formal qualifications are required — just a genuine desire to help, respect for others’ experiences, and a commitment to supporting your community.
