The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this opportunity on behalf of Ashburton Community Centre.
The Ashburton Community Centre runs regular public events at which Devonshire Teas are served, both as a popular community activity and also as an important fundraiser. We are seeking an independent, energetic, practical person to coordinate and run Devonshire Teas at our Saturday events in 2027 onwards. There will be an opportunity to train with the current Coordinator at the Ashburton A-Fair on Saturday 5th December 2026. The Ashburton Community Centre runs Devonshire Teas at the following events:
- Ashburton-A-Fair (quarterly, first Saturday of school holidays)
- Ashburton Bookfest (second Saturday in July school holidays)
- Other events on a case-by-case basis Tasks / Responsibilities
A Devonshire Tea Coordinator would undertake the following activities:
Order scones and purchase other supplies in lead up to event (all costs covered by the Centre)
1.5 hours the afternoon before the event to set up the kitchen and service area, with 2 helpers
8.30am – 3pm on the day to serve the Devonshire teas and supervise volunteers
Devonshire teas consist of:
- Scones purchased from local bakery at discount rate and picked up in the morning
- Jam and cream purchased, cream served whipped in ramekins
- Tea and plunger coffee prepared in the breakout kitchen (juice boxes and hot chocolate also available)
Current staffing to run the Devonshire Teas (including the coordinator), is usually:
- 2 people taking orders, taking payments, preparing beverages and clearing tables
- 3 people in kitchen serving scones, jam and cream, stacking dishwasher and unpacking
- Ashburton Community Centre office staff source the volunteers who present for their rostered shifts on the day.
Most events see around 100 teas served and it is usually very busy between 10.30am – 1pm.
