Regular - more than 6 months

Time required

Weekly Wednesdays Arrive 7:15pm for a 7:30pm start. Training finishes at 8:30pm.

Training

An online induction to Special Olympics and onboarding into the club will be provided. We offer online courses via www.specialolympics.com.au/inclusive-sport-academy.

The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this opportunity on behalf of Special Olympics Melbourne Inner East (MIE).

  Special Olympics is a not-for-profit organisation who helps those with an intellectual disability to participate in sport to enhance their physical and mental wellbeing, sense of purpose and community connections. 

  KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Weekly Training Program 

  • Support athletes as they participate in their swim training and skills development 
  • Provide high quality training to athletes of varying skill levels, cognitive abilities and capacity. 
  • Monitor and provide feedback regarding athlete development 
  • Provide a safe and supportive environment that encourages athletes to achieve their personal best 
  • Encourage the participation of all attending athletes, regardless of ability 
  • Monitor athletes and ensure their safety and adherence to the code of conduct during program activities 
  • Encourage athletes to encourage and support each other on while training 
  • Know all the safety concerns of athletes in your program (e.g. mobility/instability issues, epilepsy, asthma etc.) 
  • Mentor and guide assistant coaches 
  • Be a positive ambassador for Special Olympics 

  SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: 

  • A minimum Bronze-level (second level) accreditation with Swimming Australia (must be current/active). 
  • Has previous Swim Coaching experience 
  • Have the knowledge to implement/deliver best-practice swim coaching techniques. 
  • Familiarity with the Special Olympics Athlete-centred coaching guidelines 
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills 
  • Ability to be flexible and to improvise when needed 
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others to believe in the Special Olympics Mission 
  • Ability to work within set boundaries 
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills 
  • Understanding of relevant WH&S requirements 
  • Good time management skills
