Time required

We have 2 shifts on Thursdays, during school terms: - 10:15am-12:30pm (3 x 45 minute tutoring sessions) - 1:30pm-3:00pm (2 x 45 minute tutoring sessions)

Training

Volunteers are given full training, induction and site orientation. The Volunteer Coordinator and Digital Coordinator will provide initial training for your role at Carringbush. Initially you will observe the Digital Mentor working with students, then progress to working one-on-one.

The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this role on behalf Carringbush Adult Education.

Carringbush Adult Education delivers Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Employability Skills programs tailored to adult learners with diverse needs. Our programs are contextualised and have a strong focus on the development of oral communication skills, as well as literacy skills for employment and participation in the wider Australian community. We are a not-for-profit Registered Training Organisation that aims to empower Richmond and Collingwood’s most high-need adult learners, with a focus on migrant-background residents at the beginning of their education and vocational pathways.

Digital Literacy Mentors will:

  • Support adult students enrolled in our Digital Essentials program to develop digital literacy skills and confidence
  • Provide individualised tutoring in 45 min sessions, based on students' learning goals
  • Use Northstar and/or other platforms to explain digital literacy concepts
  • Support and encourage clients to explore new skills and to practice at home
  • Record details of each session in a Google Document
  • Work under the supervision of our Digital Mentor and Digital Coordinator, in person in North Richmond

Volunteers need:

  • Good digital skills across a number of devices and platforms
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff and students
  • Ability to work independently
  • Empathy, patience, a collaborative approach to problem solving and to be encouraging

Desirable knowledge and skills:

  • Experience in working with people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
