The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this opportunity on behalf of Balwyn Evergreen Centre.
Do you enjoy helping people get the hang of technology?
Balwyn Evergreen Centre (BEC) is looking for a Digital Skills Support Volunteer to help older community members build their digital skills, confidence and independence through the Be Connected program.
You'll support participants to use their own smartphones, tablets or computers and work through online learning modules based on their interests and goals.
You don't need to be a formal IT trainer. We're looking for someone with good IT skills who is patient, approachable and able to explain things clearly to people with different levels of digital confidence.
What you'll do
- Help participants create a Be Connected account and access the online platform.
- Guide participants through modules of their choice using their own device.
- Support individuals or small groups of up to eight participants.
- Provide basic assistance with device settings, internet connectivity and account access.
- Explain things simply and patiently, adapting your approach to each participant.
- Encourage participants to have a go themselves rather than taking over.
Participants will initially work towards completing a minimum of 10 modules. They can then continue learning at home or return to BEC to explore additional modules.
There are two ways you can be involved:
Small groups
Facilitate 1-hour sessions with groups of up to eight participants. You can nominate to facilitate multiple sessions each week, depending on your availability.
Individual support
Nominate a 2–4 hour block when you're available and BEC will book participants into appointments during that time. Appointments are generally around 30 minutes, allowing approximately 15 minutes for a module and 15 minutes for account setup and individual support.
What we're looking for
You will have:
- Intermediate IT skills and confidence using smartphones, tablets and computers.
- An IT background or practical experience supporting others with technology.
- Confidence navigating different devices, operating systems and online platforms.
- The ability to troubleshoot basic technology and connectivity issues.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to explain technology simply.
- Patience and empathy when supporting people with different levels of digital confidence.
- A willingness to repeat instructions and adapt your approach.
- The ability to guide and encourage participants without taking over.
Experience supporting older people with technology, or experience in teaching, mentoring or training, is desirable but not essential.
What we provide
You'll receive an induction to Balwyn Evergreen Centre and the Be Connected program, including a basic walkthrough of our reporting processes and ongoing support from the BEC team.
The role is focused on supporting participants to develop their digital skills rather than providing technical repairs or formal IT support. More complex technical issues can be referred to BEC staff.
Screening
As with all BEC volunteer roles, volunteers are required to complete a National Police Check and provide two referees as part of our standard volunteer screening process.
This is a rewarding opportunity to use your digital skills to help older people stay connected, independent and engaged in their community.
