The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this opportunity on behalf of Craig Family Centre.

We are looking for a creative and motivated Marketing & Promotions Officer (volunteer) to help us strengthen the way we promote our neighbourhood house, programs and services to the community.

We run a diverse range of community programs and activities for people of all ages, and we would love to hear your ideas and give you the opportunity to help shape our approach.

This role could be a great fit for a marketing, communications, media, design or community development student; someone looking to build practical experience; a creative person wanting to contribute their skills to their local community; or an experienced marketing professional who would like to share their knowledge.

What you could get involved in

Depending on your skills and interests, you might:

  • Develop new approaches to reaching new participants, local residents and community groups.
  • Develop or contribute to a simple marketing and communications plan for the centre.
  • Review our current marketing and suggest improvements.
  • Help develop ideas for promoting our community programs and services.
  • Assist with our social media content and strategy.
  • Help create posters, flyers, newsletters and other promotional materials.
  • Contribute to our email newsletter and digital communications.
  • Explore ways to improve our online presence and reach new audiences.
  • Potentially attend networking opportunities with other neighbourhood houses and community organisations, where appropriate and depending on availability.

You don't need to be an expert in every area. We are interested in what you can bring to the role, whether that's strategic thinking, graphic design, social media, writing, photography, digital marketing, communications, branding or simply a really good eye for what works.

Creative input

This is not intended to be a role where you are simply handed a list of posters to make. We want to give the right volunteer space to think, suggest, create and take co-ownership of projects. You may have the opportunity to develop your own marketing ideas, recommend changes to our approach and contribute to the way the neighbourhood house presents itself to the community.

Your creativity and perspective will be genuinely valued. We know that people with different experiences, skills and ideas can see opportunities that others cannot see.

We will work with you to establish priorities and make sure your ideas are practical and appropriate for a community organisation, while giving you room to develop your own approach.

About us

Our programs span different ages and interests, with a strong focus on community connection, participation, learning, creativity and wellbeing.

We are also committed to developing our volunteer community. Volunteers are an important part of what we do and are invited to participate in termly volunteer celebration events, receive newsletters sharing training and employment opportunities, access in-house training where available, and connect with other volunteers and community members.

For the right person, there may also be opportunities to participate in networking with other neighbourhood houses and community organisations.

Skills and experience

We would particularly welcome people with experience or an interest in:

  • Community engagement
  • Communications planning
  • Marketing strategy
  • Marketing and communications
  • Social media
  • Graphic design or visual communication
  • Content creation
  • Copywriting and editing
  • Branding and visual identity
  • Digital marketing

Formal qualifications are not required. This opportunity may suit a student wanting practical experience, someone returning to the workforce, a person building a portfolio, or an experienced professional looking to contribute their skills to the community.

What you'll gain

  • Practical experience in marketing and communications within a community organisation.
  • The opportunity to develop work for a real community audience.
  • Creative encouragement and the opportunity to contribute your own ideas.
  • Experience working within a Neighbourhood House/community sector environment.
  • Opportunities to build professional networks, where appropriate.
  • Opportunities to connect with other volunteers and community members.
  • Access to relevant in-house training and volunteer development opportunities.
  • A chance to make a tangible contribution to how local people discover and access community programs.
