Commitment

Regular - more than 6 months

Time required

We are open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm. A volunteer slot is either 10am-1pm or 1pm-4pm. Some volunteers do two slots a month. Some do two full days a week. The rest are somewhere in between. We aim to fit new volunteers onto days where we have the most space. Most volunteers like to agree a regular pattern so that they can easily fit it around the rest of their activities.

Training

We provide training in managing the till and taking sales, safety at work, and receiving donations. Some volunteers also learn to sort and price items. All volunteers must take some simple training called "Safe Ministry" which is an Anglican church training program aimed at making sure the workplace is safe for us all, but especially any vulnerable people. It is also appropriate for the shop setting.

Add new friends and useful volunteering to your weekly or monthly routine. Volunteer at a friendly small Op Shop in Balwyn. We raise money for local and international projects and have fun recycling the much-loved donations that we receive.

Most new volunteers begin by working at the till, greeting the customers, taking sales and keeping the shop tidy. If you know Op Shops, picture the person behind the counter. They also learn what goods we can receive and which we won't, so they can advise people bringing donations. We love to have positive friendly contact with our customers. Sorting donations and pricing goods is done by a smaller number of experienced volunteers, working closely with the manager on the day.

The shop is run by St Hilary's Church, and insurance, accounting and the legal framework and training is via St Hilary's and the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne. The profits are donated to St Hilary's HOPE for local community needs, and to some international projects which help needy people.
