Volunteer Peer Support – Chinese Speakers with Lived Experience of Gambling Harm
(Mandarin and/or Cantonese required) Are you looking to give back and support others using your own lived experience with gambling harm? We’re looking for compassionate volunteers who speak Cantonese or Mandarin and have personal experience with gambling harm — either directly or through supporting a loved one — to join our Chinese Peer Connection program. This is your chance to make a meaningful difference by offering telephone-based peer support to others who are navigating similar challenges.
About the Program
Chinese Peer Connection is a long-standing and trusted program that has been supporting the Chinese community in Victoria for over 15 years. We provide culturally appropriate peer support and education to individuals affected by gambling harm, helping them feel heard, understood, and empowered. Your personal insight and empathy can be a powerful source of hope and encouragement for others beginning their recovery journey.
About the Role
As a Peer Support Volunteer, you will:
- Provide one-on-one support over the phone to people who have experienced or been affected by gambling harm
- Share your story where appropriate to build trust and connection
- Offer encouragement, understanding, and practical strategies based on your own recovery experience
- Assist individuals in reducing isolation and increasing their motivation to seek help or make positive changes
- Maintain confidentiality and respectful communication at all times
You’ll be supported by a dedicated team and given guidance every step of the way. Volunteers work closely with the program coordinator to ensure they feel confident, safe, and empowered in their role.
What We’re Looking For
We welcome expressions of interest from people who:
- Have lived experience of gambling harm (either personally or through a loved one)
- Are fluent in Mandarin or Cantonese (both written and spoken helpful, but not essential)
- Have strong listening and communication skills
- Are empathetic, reliable, and respectful of others’ journeys
- Are comfortable speaking on the phone and offering support in a one-on-one setting
You don’t need formal qualifications — just a willingness to help, a non-judgmental attitude, and the desire to connect with others in a meaningful way.
