The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this role on behalf of The Rotary Club of Kew, Fair Trade & Gift Shop.
You will ensure only suitable items are displayed for customers while maintaining a clean and organised sorting area; essentially, you will be part of the "back of house" team, ensuring the smooth operation of a charity retail store by selecting and preparing merchandise for sale.
Key responsibilities of an op shop sorter:
- Sorting donations: Categorise donated items, such as clothing, household goods, books, and electronics, into their respective sections.
- Quality check: Inspect each item for damage, stains, and functionality, and determine if it is suitable for sale.
- Pricing items: Assign appropriate prices to each item based on its condition and market value.
- Tagging items: Attach price tags and any necessary labels to each item.
- Organising stock: Arrange sorted items neatly on shelves or racks for easy access by staff.
- Maintaining cleanliness: Keep the sorting area clean and tidy, disposing of unusable items appropriately.
- Handling special items: Identify and handle delicate or valuable items with extra care.
- Communicating with staff: Inform colleagues about any issues with donations or stock levels.
Skills and qualities required for an op shop sorter:
- Attention to detail: Ability to identify minor flaws and make accurate quality assessments
- Physical ability: Comfortable lifting and moving various types of items
- Organisational skills: Efficiently sorting and categorising large volumes of goods
- Basic product knowledge: Understanding the value and condition of different types of items
- Teamwork: Collaborate with other staff to ensure smooth operations
- Positive attitude: Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment with a diverse range of donations
