Homework Club Tutor
Craig Family Centre

The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this role on behalf of Craig Family Centre.
Volunteer Opportunity: Homework Club Tutor Location: Craig Family Centre, Ashburton Session Time: Wednesdays, 4.00pm – 5.30pm (during school terms) Time Commitment: 1.5 hours per week (plus optional planning and training)
About the Role:
Do you enjoy supporting children in their learning, building their confidence, and helping them thrive at school? The Craig Family Centre is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join our Homework Club team as tutors.
Our Homework Club supports primary school–aged children from Ashburton and the broader Boroondara community, many of whom benefit from extra learning support.
The program combines game-based numeracy and literacy activities, one-on-one homework help, and a friendly social environment that makes learning fun.
As a tutor, you won’t just help with homework—you’ll also contribute to lesson planning, work alongside other dedicated volunteers, and play a key role in creating a positive, supportive learning space.
This is a great opportunity for people who are passionate about education, enjoy working with children, or are considering careers in teaching, youth work, or community development.
What the Sessions Involve:
Each weekly session includes:
- Welcome & Check-in (5–10 min): Building trust and connection through introductions or warm-up games
- Focused Learning (30–40 min): One-on-one homework support or small group activities in literacy and numeracy
- Game-Based Learning (20 min): Fun, educational games designed to build confidence and reinforce school skills
- Wrap-Up (10 min): Reflection circle, positive feedback, and preparing children for the week ahead
You’ll work with the same children regularly, allowing you to build supportive relationships and witness their growth over time. Please note; classes are flexible and responsive to child needs, so sometimes might change slightly.
Tips for Tutors:
- Be encouraging and patient—confidence is as important as the homework itself
- Use games and creativity to make learning fun
- Work collaboratively with other tutors
- Remember, it’s about supporting the child’s growth, not getting every answer right

- Provide one-on-one or small group homework support for primary school children
- Assist in delivering structured literacy and numeracy activities
- Contribute to creating a safe, welcoming, and positive learning environment
- Collaborate with staff and other tutors to reflect on sessions and improve the program
Skills & Experience (desirable but not essential):
- Enjoy working with children and supporting their learning
- Confidence to help with primary-level literacy and numeracy
- Patience, empathy, and good communication skills
- Interest in education, tutoring, youth work, or community programs
- Previous experience in tutoring, teaching, or mentoring (optional—training can be provided)
